Where Winds Meet AI NPCs are the strangest and most talked-about part of the game. Instead of picking a dialogue option, you type whatever you want into a chat box. The character answers in real time. Some conversations end in a new friend and a stream of gifts. Others loop, stall, or turn violent. This guide explains how the system works, how to raise affinity, and what to do when a chat goes wrong.
What are Where Winds Meet AI NPCs?
AI NPCs are a small group of characters powered by a live chatbot. Most characters in the game still use ordinary scripted dialogue. The AI ones are optional side encounters, and the game marks them with a chat option when you talk to them.
The game is a free-to-play wuxia open-world RPG from NetEase, set in a version of China’s Five Dynasties period. Many of these chat characters live in Qinghe, the early region, though they appear elsewhere too.
Players are split on the idea. Some love how alive the world feels. Others say a chatbot breaks the mood of a martial arts story. Because the game labels AI characters clearly, you can ignore them completely and lose nothing essential.
How the AI chat system works
You approach a marked NPC, choose the chat option, and a text box opens. Everything you type goes to the AI. It replies in character, so the same line can get different answers on different tries.
Each AI NPC has a hidden goal. A short hint in the chat panel describes it in vague terms. Treat that hint as a checklist. Many chats feel finished, yet the game does not count them as a success. The hint tells you what is missing.
Affinity and rewards
Every NPC starts as a Stranger. As you chat, affinity climbs through several stages until it reaches Revered. Affection is tracked on a scale up to 100. A successful chat can push it there in one sitting.
Once an NPC is a friend, they show up in your Jianghu Friends menu. You can reread old chats there. Friends who reach Revered send gifts through chat on a regular cycle.

The payoff is modest, mostly flavor and small bonuses. Maximum rewards need 100 affection in total across NPCs, and mini-games with other characters count toward that goal. One stubborn chat rarely blocks you.
Spotting an AI chat NPC
Not every NPC offers a chat. Only the AI ones show a chat option in the interaction menu. Early examples near the General’s Shrine include Fu Lushou, Chai Bakun, Lie Buxi, and Zhao Dali.
Open the Jianghu Friends overview to track the AI characters you have found. Each entry shows your current standing.
AI NPCs worth befriending first
1: Fu Lushou
Fu Lushou is a temperamental NPC near the General’s Shrine. He only becomes talkable around noon, so move the in-game clock to midday if he is asleep. He hunts for a hidden treasure and turns hostile fast if he distrusts you.
Pick the thorough interrogation option to open the chat. Then mention his dog, Fu Luwa, and present yourself as a friend of the animal. He usually apologizes and warms up right away. His supposed brother, Fu Lubao, has his own chat and is one of the trickier characters in Qinghe.
2: Chai Bakun
Chai Bakun chops wood near the General’s Shrine. Click through the first conversation option, then pick the second one to open the chat. You can talk freely or follow a walkthrough. If a line fails, press the reset arrow beside his name and start over.
3: Malou, Small Chisel, and others
Malou is an AI monkey on a cliffside in Heaven’s Threshold. Press F beside him to open the chat. Short, friendly replies work best.
Small Chisel lives in Mercyheart Town in Qinghe and loves gossip. Steer the chat toward rumors and he opens up. Li Yueniang worries about how to get closer to someone she cares about. Listen first, then offer a believable plan.
Lu Sheng is a quick test of how fickle the system is. Agree to buy his treat, then follow through in the conversation as if you paid.
4: Stubborn characters
Some characters resist every approach. Qin Caiwei is the usual example. Listen to their story, describe a believable resolution, and leave on friendly terms.
Tips for chatting with AI NPCs
1: Keep replies short
Short messages work better than speeches. Answer the question the NPC just asked. Mention names and objects the NPC raises, because the AI tends to key on them. Heavy narration confuses some characters, so keep it light.
2: Use parentheses
Many AI NPCs describe their own movements in brackets, such as (waves hand) or (looks surprised). The system responds to the same style from you. A small action in parentheses can nudge the scene forward.
Players have also used it to claim invented actions, like handing over a missing item. Developers may patch that, and it makes the chat feel hollow, so treat it as a curiosity.
3: The echo trick
Some players repeat the NPC’s last line back as a question. If an NPC says to find the buried treasure chest, you reply, “The buried treasure chest?” The chatbot can fall into a loop.
Keep it up and it may declare the quest done. It works on some characters and fails on others. It also skips the story, which is the point of these chats.
Fixing AI chat problems
1: Stalled chats
AI NPCs sometimes agree with you forever without registering a success. Use the reset button at the top of the chat window. It clears the AI’s context for that NPC. Then replay your replies from the start. Check the hint text first, since a missed condition can cause the stall.

2: Hostile NPCs
Lines read as threats, accusations, or blatant disrespect can make an NPC attack. Do not fight it out. Return to the login screen from the menu instead. Afterward you can talk to the character again.
Dialogue NPCs that you kill can respawn, but do not rely on that. Jokes about violence deserve extra care, since the AI cannot hear your tone.
3: Missing chat option
If the chat prompt is missing, the NPC may be in the wrong state or place. Fu Lushou can bug out and fail to appear where he should. Reloading the game resets the AI and places him correctly. Check the time of day too, since some characters only talk at certain hours.
Why players are divided
Since launch, the AI NPCs have been a constant talking point. Fans enjoy the freedom. You can ask odd questions, play along with a character’s troubles, and watch the scene bend. Critics say the chats break immersion, and some find certain exchanges uncomfortable.
One limit stands out. The AI rarely enforces boundaries, so players can steer chats far from the intended story. That produces odd results, such as NPCs that spiral into grief or romance when pushed. For clean progress, follow the hint and stay on the character’s own problem.
A routine for any new NPC
Start by reading the hint text. It names the outcome the NPC wants, even if vaguely. Next, open with a greeting and ask what is wrong. Most AI NPCs carry a problem, such as a lost brother, a hidden treasure, or a worry about love.
Let them explain it fully. Then answer the exact problem with a believable response or promise. Finally, end the chat politely and check your affinity in the Jianghu Friends menu. If nothing changed, reset and try a different angle.
Freeform chat or tricks?
Freeform chatting is the best approach for most players. It teaches you how each character thinks, and it never feels like cheating. It costs the most time, though.
Copied lines from walkthroughs are faster for simple characters such as Chai Bakun and Fu Lushou. They break when the AI drifts, so keep the reset button handy.
Tricks like the echo method and fake actions are quickest of all. They also drain the fun, and they may stop working after an update. Use them only on a stuck chat, never as your first move.
When this advice fails
Some characters ignore the usual rules. A few chats end without a clear success message, so check affinity to confirm the win. Others need a specific time, place, or earlier step before the chat option appears. Some respond only to one key detail, such as Fu Lushou and the name of his dog.

The system also changes over time. A tip that worked at launch may fail after a patch. Trust the on-screen hint over any guide, including this one.
